Delayed brain injury symptoms after a car wreck

On Behalf of | Nov 4, 2022 | Car Accidents

People who are involved in a car wreck are at risk of suffering catastrophic injuries. One of these is a traumatic brain injury, which can cause severe symptoms for the victim. Some people don’t realize that these symptoms might not show up right away. In fact, it can be days or weeks after the wreck when the person realizes something is wrong.

Another misconception about brain injuries is that you have to hit your head to have a brain injury. It’s possible that the impact of the crash will cause the brain to slam against the inside of the skull. This can cause an injury without you ever hitting your head.

What symptoms signal a brain injury is present?

There are many symptoms associated with a brain injury. The most common of these is a persistent headache that’s sometimes accompanied by eye fatigue. Other symptoms that can signal a brain injury include:

  • Mood swings
  • Confusion
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Changes in sleep habits
  • Irritability or frustration
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Problems with speech
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Loss of coordination

Some symptoms, such as clear fluid draining from the nose or ears and loss of consciousness require emergency care.

Everyone who’s involved in a motor vehicle crash should be vigilant about watching for signs of a brain injury. Prompt medical attention if any symptoms manifest is crucial. If you were seriously injured in a car wreck, you may opt to pursue a compensation claim. Ohio law limits how long you have to get your case filed, so you should work with someone familiar with these matters so you don’t waste any time.
