What steps should you take after a car accident?

On Behalf of | Dec 7, 2023 | Personal Injury

A car accident can happen when you least expect it and result in debilitating injuries. These injuries may affect your ability to return to work, manage tasks at home and engage in activities you used to enjoy.

Right after a car accident occurs, there are several steps you should take. By following these steps after an accident, you can navigate the aftermath more effectively, ensuring your safety and facilitating a smoother resolution with your insurance company.

Prioritize safety

After a car accident, prioritize safety. Move vehicles to the side of the road, if possible, and turn on hazard lights. This helps prevent additional accidents and ensures the safety of everyone involved.

Check for injuries

Assess the well-being of all parties involved. If there are injuries, call for emergency medical assistance immediately. Your health and the health of others should be the top priority.

Exchange information

Exchange information with the other driver(s). Collect names, phone numbers, addresses and insurance details. Additionally, note the make, model and color of the vehicles involved.

Document the scene

Take pictures of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, license plates and the surrounding area. Documenting the scene can provide valuable evidence for insurance claims and investigations.

File a police report

Contact local law enforcement to report the accident. Even in minor incidents, having an official record can be beneficial for insurance purposes.

Gather witness information

If there are witnesses to the accident, obtain their contact information. Witness statements can support your version of events in case of disputes.

Notify your insurance company

Promptly inform your insurance company about the accident. Provide them with the gathered information and details about the collision.

Seek medical attention

In 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 2.1 million emergency room visits occurred due to car accident injuries. Even if injuries seem minor, seek medical attention. Some injuries may not manifest immediately, and having a medical record can help for insurance claims.

Stay involved in the claims process. Follow up with your insurance company, provide any additional information they request and stay informed about the progress of your claim.
