Stay safe this winter with these 3 winter-weather tips

On Behalf of | Nov 29, 2018 | Personal Injury

With the snow coming down, now is a good time to talk about driving safely in winter weather conditions. Nestled closely to Columbus, Gahanna doesn’t always get the lake effect of Northern Ohio. However, snow is still common, and with the busy highways and local streets, you have to be cautious when on the roads.

People can take several steps to avoid injury in wintry weather. Here are three things to do before you head out on the roads.

1. Prepare a safety kit

The first thing you should do is prepare a safety or first-aid kit for your vehicle. If you do end up going off the road or become stranded, you’ll want to have the kit in your vehicle where it’s easy to reach. Pack a blanket or blankets, gloves, hats, water, emergency portions of food, bandages and other items you might need.

2. Slow down for traffic

It’s often difficult to slow down on highways such as I-270 or I-670 because other travelers dictate the speed. However, you should slow to the speed you’re comfortable at. If you notice slick, wet roads, you should reduce your speed and place more space between yourself and the next vehicle.

3. Monitor the weather at home

Sometimes, the best thing to do is to stay home or at the place where you currently are. Driving home in slick conditions is one thing, but trying to maneuver through an ice storm or blizzard is another. Know the weather, and know your limits.

These tips can help you and others stay safe. If you are in a crash, you’ll have the basics to protect yourself until emergency care arrives.
